Block Printing

The History
The traditional art of block printing has been celebrated and mastered in Rajasthan for approximately 500 years, becoming a hallmark of the region's rich cultural heritage. This craft was first introduced to the Jaipur area by the Chhipa community, who have preserved and refined their techniques over the centuries. The skills and knowledge required for block printing are passed down through generations within families and communities, ensuring that this vibrant art form continues to thrive. Today, Rajasthan's block prints are renowned worldwide for their exquisite patterns, vibrant colors, and the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each piece.

The Process
Block printing is a centuries-old technique where intricate patterns, images, and text are carefully carved into wooden blocks, inked, and then pressed onto fabric to create beautiful prints. Though its origins trace back to ancient times, block printing remains a revered art form, especially in cities like Jaipur, where it is deeply woven into cultural and historical traditions.
Hugo and I were lucky enough to experience block printing firsthand with our tailors, and let’s just say, it’s much harder than it looks! Don’t be fooled- getting the patterns perfectly aligned and applying just the right amount of pressure is incredibly challenging. Seeing the process up close gave us an even greater appreciation for the immense skill, precision, and artistry that goes into every single piece.
